EcoReefs Frequently Asked Questions |

|
What is the minimum order? The minimum order is one 20' container lot, which includes components to assemble approximately 325 modules. The next order size up is a 40' container, which includes components to assemble approximately 750 modules. Are additional materials required? We will supply the additional materials needed to assemble the modules, including marine epoxy, cable ties for clamping the module components together while the epoxy cures, anchors and tools. How do I get pricing? You can get an estimate by completing our Request a Quote form, or you can contact michae@ecoreefs.com for a complete quote. It is helpful if you have an idea of the size of the area you are interested in rehabilitating and the substrate type (sand/rubble or hard limestone). What are EcoReefs modules made from? EcoReef modules are made from fired, unglazed, food-grade ceramic, identical to that which is commonly used in the production of coffee cups, dinnerware, or bathroom tile. Do they dissolve in seawater? No. Because the modules are made from fired ceramic, the material is vitreous and will not dissolve in seawater, However, the modules will eventually become incorporated into the reef sediments. Can other shapes or styles be made? Consult with us if you have need for a specific morphology. We can produce specialized forms on a custom basis. How long will it take for reef fish to colonize an EcoReef? Depending on the health of local fish stocks, fish begin to inhabit the structure within a matter of months. How long will it take for corals to colonize an EcoReef? Again, depending on the health of local coral stocks, corals begin to inhabit the structure within the first two years. Will EcoReef modules accept coral transplants? Yes, coral branch tips can be attached directly to the ceramic branches using cable ties, or epoxied into mounting wells on the module upper surface of the module, which are sized to receive plugs cast in 1 oz medicine cups, a standard size base for nursery-grown corals. What kinds of settings can EcoReefs be used in? EcoReef installations are best deployed in low to moderate wave energy settings at depths between 10' and 60' where the bottom is not too steeply sloping. Backreef lagoons, lee sides of islands, and protected sea coasts are the most suitable types of sites. What about current and surge? EcoReef modules are designed to withstand current and surge, and can be anchored using a variety of inexpensive anchors. The modules have a 2:1 aspect ratio for a low profile, and each module rests on multiple supporting and stabilizing branches. When deployed in large arrays, the modules will act to baffle wave energy, producing quieter water conditions in the interior of the array. Are EcoReefs dangerous to divers? The tips of the branches and spines on EcoReef modules are rounded off for safety. However, as is the case with live coral, there is always the potential for bodily harm if divers, snorkelers or swimmers do not exercise proper caution and come in close contact with the modules. It is the responsibility of EcoReefs clients to properly advise all visitors to maintain a safe distance at all times while viewing an EcoReef installation underwater. |
